Join The Advocates’ Walk the Walk
in Support of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month
   
 
  • Free, community-wide march and rally to increase awareness of domestic violence prevention
  • Businesses, clubs and teams are encouraged to Walk the Walk and receive recognition
  • Tunes provided by Craig Campbell, T-shirt decorating and other family-friendly activities
  • Quarter pound gourmet dogs by "Frank You Very Much” Home of the "Slaw Dogs” $6.00 special — gourmet dog, drink and chips, or kiddie meal $4.00
     
Join The Advocates for Survivors of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault at the 5th Annual Walk the Walk, a community-wide march and rally to increase awareness of domestic violence prevention at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 6th, 2012, at the Farmers Market lot in Hailey. Walk the Walk is sponsored by The Advocates in connection with Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Walk the Walk brings to life the old adage that we cannot fully understand someone else’s experience until we have walked in their shoes. Just a few hours of time participating in community events such as Walk the Walk can make a lifetime of difference in building awareness.
 
  • Family violence is a learned behavior that impacts the entire community. The Advocates receives 53 requests for assistance each day. Domestic violence is the #1 cause of homelessness for women, children and teens.
  • Hailey Mayor Fritz Haemmerle has proclaimed the month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and encourages our citizens to work together to eliminate domestic violence from our community.
  • This free, family-friendly event is designed to give citizens, businesses, clubs and teams a fun and festive opportunity to participate in domestic violence awareness and prevention
 
Agenda:
 

1. 11:00 a.m. : Gather your family, friends and co-workers, and join us at the Farmer’s Market lot next to Bank of America in Hailey on October 6th for a community march and rally. The Advocates will have high heels to wear for those who dare!

2. Proudly carry your company or team banner and wear your company’s t-shirt. The Advocates will acknowledge your participation on their Website, Facebook group page and post-event press release.

3. 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. : Frank You Very Much — Home of the "Slaw Dogs”, is generously hosting quarter pound gourmet dogs with all the trimmings. Special event pricing will be $6 for a gourmet dog, drink and chips or $4 for a kiddie dog, drink and chips. Tunes by Craig Campbell, t-shirt decorating, giveaways and guest speakers.

Family violence statistics of interest:
  • Children are likely to be physically assaulted in 86% of homes with partner violence.
  • In Blaine County, there are approximately 5,000 children under the age of 18 and statistically 22 percent, or nearly one-quarter of them, are likely to be living with domestic violence.
  • In Idaho, there were over 6,000 cases of family violence last year.
    In the U.S., between 3 and 5 billion dollars are spent on medical expensed related to family violence. Businesses forfeit another 100 million in lost wages, sick leave, absenteeism, and non-productivity due to domestic violence.
  • Domestic violence is the #1 cause of homelessness for women, children and teens.
     
 
Each year, The Advocates helps over 500 women and children build safe lives, and reaches more than 4,000 students and community members to promote messages of safety and prevention. Last year:
 
 
  • We received 53 requests for life-changing services each day.
  • Immediate, walk-in support was provided 7,128 times.
  • Urgent hotline and phone support were provided 8,500 times.
  • We provided 3,844 shelter nights to 41 women and 22 children, as well as their companion animals.

About The Advocates for Survivors of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault
Founded in 1991 and led by Executive Director Tricia Swartling, The Advocates is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit with the mission to prevent domestic violence and sexual assault in our communities through education, shelter and supportive services. The Advocates provides more than 30 free, essential services in English and Spanish, 24 hours a day, including a staffed shelter, crisis intervention, safety planning, support groups, legal assistance and prevention education in the schools. Vital funding support is realized through the Annual Fund drive, The Attic Store, The Annual Gala Black & White Soiree, and public and private foundation grants.
