Join The Advocates for Survivors of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault at the 6th Annual Walk the Walk, a community-wide march and rally to increase awareness of domestic violence prevention at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 5th, 2013, at the Farmers Market lot in Hailey. Walk the Walk is put on by The Advocates in connection with Domestic Violence Awareness Month and sponsored by Panache, Atkinsons Market, Joe's Backhoe Service, and St. Luke's Wood River.

Walk the Walk brings to life the old adage that we cannot fully understand someone else’s experience until we have walked in their shoes. Just a few minutes of time participating in community events such as Walk the Walk can make a lifetime of difference in building awareness.
  • Family violence is a learned behavior that impacts the entire community. The Advocates receives 68 requests for assistance or information each day. Domestic violence is the #1 cause of homelessness for women, children and teens.
  • Hailey Mayor Fritz Haemmerle has proclaimed the month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and encourages our citizens to work together to eliminate domestic violence from our community.
  • This free, family-friendly event  is designed to give citizens, businesses, clubs and teams a fun and festive opportunity to participate in domestic violence awareness and prevention.


1.     11:00 a.m. - Gather your family, friends and co-workers, and join us at the Farmer’s Market lot next to Bank of America in Hailey on October 5th for a community march and rally. The Advocates will have high heels to wear for those who dare!

2.     Proudly carry your company or team banner and wear your company’s t-shirt. The Advocates will acknowledge your participation on their Website, Facebook group page and post-event press release.

3.    11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. - Taco El Sol is providing food with special event pricing. Tunes by Live Audio Productions, giveaways and guest speakers.

Family violence statistics of interest:

  • Children are likely to be physically assaulted in 86% of homes with partner violence.
  • In Blaine County, there are approximately 5,000 children under the age of 18 and statistically 22 percent, or nearly one-quarter of them, are likely to be living with domestic violence.
  • In Idaho, there were over 6,000 cases of family violence last year.
    In the U.S., between 3 and 5 billion dollars are spent on medical expenses related to family violence. Businesses forfeit another 100 million in lost wages, sick leave, absenteeism, and non-productivity due to domestic violence.
  • Domestic violence is the #1 cause of homelessness for women, children and teens.
  • One in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime.
Last year, The Advocates helped 516 women, 13 men and 177 children build safe lives, and reaches more than 4,000 students and community members to promote messages of safety and prevention. Last year:
  • We received 68 requests for life-changing services each day.
  • Immediate, walk-in support was provided 12,477 times.
  • Urgent hotline and phone support were provided 12,256 times.
  • We provided 3,713 shelter nights to 30 women and 34 children, as well as 13 companion animals.
  • We fulfilled over 1,675 requests for support such as rent assistance, food boxes, and transportation, and clothing vouchers.

The Advocates provides the community with a wide variety of innovative programs that teach children, teens, and adults how to build safe lives.  These programs include Skills for Success and Green Dot, not to mention shelter and the many other related support programs.  To get involved or for more information, please contact The Advocates at 208.788.4191.

Founded in 1991, The Advocates is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit with the mission to teach people of all ages how to build and maintain healthy relationships.  This is accomplished through education,shelter, and support services.
