Anyone can call our shelter 24 hours a day and talk to a trained advocate who can offer general support, and any needed information or referrals to other services.
Shelter is available 24 hours a day to abused women and their children. The criteria for shelter is that the woman must be a victim of domestic violence or sexual assault, and she cannot be actively psychotic or suicidal. Women and children residing in the shelter must agree to comply with the house rules and women must sign a resident agreement.
All clients are offered case management services. Case management is required for clients in shelter. Case managers work with clients to develop achievable goals in key areas of their life including, but not limited to employment, mental and emotional health, education, housing, child care, medical care, and transportation. As a client accomplishes goals established in her case plan, she moves closer to emotional and financial independence. The end goal is to have her transition to an independent, abuse free life
The Advocates offers two regular weekly general domestic violence victim groups in English and Spanish. Other groups with different focuses such as nonviolent communication and sexual assault victim survivor issues may be offered at different times, please call for current group offerings.
Up to eight sessions of individual counseling with a therapist are available for clients. Individual counseling is offered only after support groups, case management, and staff support are not effective in helping a client deal effectively with mental health issues.
All of our services are also available to victims of sexual assault. If a rape victim goes to the hospital for a rape exam, a team member is called in to support her. Counseling is offered to the victim and her immediate family.
The Advocates refers abusers to the Wood River Counseling Center which offers an abuser treatment program. The Partner Abuse Counseling and Education (PACE) program is offered on an ongoing basis in Spanish and English.
