October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month
  • Free Community Luncheon Tuesday, Oct. 26, --Understanding Domestic Violence, Presented by The Advocates and The Idaho Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence

The Advocates and The Idaho Coalition Against Sexual and domestic Violence will present a free community luncheon, “Understanding Domestic Violence” at 12:30 p.m., Tues., Oct.26 at the Y-Inn Café, Challis. The Advocates for Survivors of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, and The Coalition are co-presenting the event in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

October's Domestic Violence Awareness Month features several community-wide awareness activities, including the "Understanding Domestic Violence" luncheon and workshop, because family violence impacts the entire community,” said Trish Tobias, community education coordinator. “We look forward to providing citizens with helpful information and tools to work together to eliminate domestic violence from our homes and communities.”

Tues., Oct. 26, 2010: Understanding Domestic Violence at the Y-Inn Café, 1200 Main Street, 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. A free lunch will be served. Join us to discuss the effects of domestic violence on our relationships, our families and our communities: identify types of violence, discuss local resources, and identify barriers for victims, assist friends or loved ones impacted by domestic violence. Lead presenter: Jennifer Landhuis, advocacy and education administrator, Idaho Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence. The Advocates is entering its 20th year of providing life-changing prevention, education, shelter and supportive services. Each year, The Advocates help over 500 women and children build safe lives, and reach more than 3,000 students and community members to promote messages of safety and prevention. The Advocates‟ free essential services are available in English and Spanish, 24 hours a day and include a staffed shelter, counseling, and legal guidance.

Family violence statistics of interest:
  • Domestic violence is the #1 cause of homelessness for women, children and teens.
  • Children are likely to be physically assaulted in 86% of homes with partner violence.
  • In Blaine County, we have approximately 5,000 children under the age of 18 and statistically 22 percent, or nearly one-quarter of them are likely to be living with domestic violence.
  • In Idaho, there were an estimated 60,000 cases of family violence last year.
  • In the U.S., between 3 and 5 billion dollars are spent on medical expensed related to family violence. Businesses forfeit another 100 million in lost wages, sick leave, absenteeism, and non-productivity due to
